HIMALAYAN AYURVEDA HERBS USED IN HAVANA, PUJA, RITUALS, GAMSHALI UTTARAKHAND VLOG 4K
In my quest to document traditional healers and herbal medicine, I
visited Gamshali village. There I came across a village priest who informed about the use of some peculiar herbs in Nanda Devi Havan, which differs from traditional ones documented. It intrigued me to know more about them. Though most of them are Ayurveda medicine, it was interesting to know that, in spite of their traditional and historical use in rituals, the priest was unaware of their medicinal uses. As a
routine, I had informed them about some safe medicinal uses in a bid to promote, Information exchange of traditional knowledge & to preserve biodiversity by encouraging sustainable picking. A small overview.

NITI VILLAGE SHIVA TEMPLE, TIMMERSAIN MAHADEV, BARFANI BABA, UTTARAKHAND HIMALAYA, , 4k
Mahadeva, Moter Parvati & Lord Ganesha, epitomes in itself, but when found together in natural form, with Ganga naturally flowing over it in a pristine undisturbed environment, it is none less than divine...
Niti Mahadev or Niti Barfani baba is a swayambhu Shiva temple, that houses 3 natural shiva linga in decreasing heights. It is associated by locals of Niti village as Temple of shiva family, & the 3 linga associated with Lord Shiva, Mother Parvati and their son Lord Ganesha. This is one unique feature of the abode as it is unlike any other in the country as its natural. To add to the mystical divine experience, the linga's have natural oblation wit constant stream of glacial waters from Dhauli Ganga river through salicite rock structures which creates an aura of Mother Ganga flowing through locks of Lord Shiva. In winters from December 3 natural ice linga's form similar to Amarnath cave in Kashmir and hence its also called Niti Barfani baba. Amidst heavy rains, this as a new route from Kamad village. The traditional routes are stiff climb from either Bhatwari nor Buda Kedar.
The trek itself is not popular due to its length and hardships and hence I decided to create a 2 parts documentary explaining the route and displaying the scenes.

NLAM Travel Diaries #EP-13 REMOTE DRONAGIRI VILLAGE IN HIMALAYAS, INTERVIEW ABOUT HERBS & CUSTOMS, India,
NLAM presents 13th episode of short video documentaries about traditional healers , ethno-medicine; local customs & cultures in India. These are made during excursions to heritage village and exclusive valleys to collect Vedic herbs and documenting traditional knowledge.
The name "Dronagiri" is of great significance in Indian culture. The Ramayana makes strong mention of it as the mountain lifted by Lord Hanuman and transported it to Lanka to procure the mystical Sanjeevani herb to revive Sri Laxmana. The mountain contained many miraculous herbs and Lord Hanumana was short of time to select the one required as instructed by the vaidya sage Sushena. This chain of events has been rooted in the traditions of locals of Dronagiri village who do not worship Lord Hanumana here as he uprooted their life giving mountain. Located at 3750 m (abmsl), Dronagiri is the highest inhabited village in the pristine Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve (NDBR). The village becomes desolate in winter and people leave for lower habitations.They leave their houses empty and food stocked (interestingly potatoes which do not get rancid even after 6-8 moths). They return in late May and only enter the houses after a ritual to ward off spirits. Being located at such inhospitable terrain and being cut for most parts with civilisation they have immense knowledge of herbs and harsh survival techniques. I hope going this journey opens up new perspective to less known land...

THE BENEFITS & HARMS OF THE SPREAD OF HERBAL MEDICINE THROUGH DIGITAL & SOCIAL MEDIA .... A THOUGHT
Herbal medicine use and sustainable biodiversity implications are something we all should be concerned about. In age of digital media where news “right or wrong”, “fact or fiction” “fake or real” spreads like fire, its imperative we stop and think before jumping on to the bandwagon. Being an Ayurveda physician though i will restrict myself to herbs. Over years as digital media and instant messaging has grown with cheap data plans, I have seen a surplus growth of herbal cures and methods being propagated over social platforms through handheld devices. To be honest, I could relate to the good intention behind it overlooking the marketing economics & popularity sojourns associated with some of them. However for the first time in few months I am beginning to observe its repercussions on a grander scale.
Over 15 years of my Ayurveda clinical practise, my main mode of work has been to preserve bio-diversity (or in simpler terms herbs in their natural habitat) by creating awareness and sustainable picking. This is ensured through educating the locals about their herbal surroundings in remote villages (mainly in the western ghats & the Himalayas) and buying from them at a higher rate the selected produce in small quantities ensuring that the picking promotes more crop of the same species in coming years without any in-rooting of invasive species. Unfortunately in past few years this activity has seen cascading decline. Though there are many contributing factors to it like;
- The local youth getting more lucrative job opportunities
- Growing tourism
- Urbanisation
- Lack of transfer of traditional knowledge within generations
the one major impact has been digital media.
